OGB presents this informal summary of the pros and cons of shipping container buildings by Ted Elsasser, owner of http://www.SouthwestSustainableBuilders.com .

Shipping containers have a lot of advantages: high availability, you can quickly get a lockable shelter, they are easily moved, and relatively affordable.

But their thermal performance is poor without adding a good deal of additional construction, there are condensation issues, etc.

This is a great idea for a income property. I would like to put a container home on my property and rent it out. I think container homes are outstanding, the sky is the limit.

This chick is AWESOME!  I was thinking of learning how to cut metal and welding so I could work on my container home.  I hesitated because I didn't see any women doing that … but now, after seeing this vid, I'm game.

The guy gave a great deal of good knowledge. I guess the complainers are just so wise on the subject and so rich they can sit and bash videos on youtube. I am a retired contractor and was looking for general information on the subject. I would say this video is a ten. It's free you Stupid Fuckers.

what you have to say is great, having an expert's views on what are good and bad about shipping containers, but really you keep looking to the side, presumably at the guy working off screen? should get him to take a coffee break and keep looking at the camera more, instead of waggling your head back and forth constantly.

Why does every comment section have a bunch of bitching COMPLAINING people that end up attacking one another. then totally get off track and don't even have any good arguments about the video they watched.

I am building a shipping container house on some land I have in northern AZ. They should be impervious to any kind of weather. But one thing to be aware of is that you can't do this within most city and town limits, because they do not meet building codes. And pretty much all cities have laws against not getting your electricity from the local power company

50 Million containers??? ….you just lost all credibility. Corten steel is NOT readily recyclable… if ii can be a container..you dont recycle…if it is no longer structurally safe to be a container, the steel is gone….rusted….good luck recycling…

For insulating shipping containers I have solved both the condensation problem and the ease of insulation by using spray polyurethane insulation on the outside. Spray acrylic elastomeric over that and you have a long term insulation with sound deadening.

Wood rots, wood burns, wood cracks, wood is eaten by termites and even wasps. Wood keeps its structure only for the first 20 years if even, unless you live in earthquake & trepidation areas, you'll have problems sooner. What's crappier than wood ? Sheet rock of course.
The only wood advantage is that historically, most men have learned how to build one theoretically & can probably do it themselves if in prime physical condition and all materials & tools available.

There's the wrong and right way to do container homes, for those wishing to build bunkers underground, encasing them in cement is a great idea. Otherwise you must have experts in fabrication & welders to put them together into a home shape, then the insulation.

Starts off the video with his own rant about America and is way to distracted. If your going to make a video make a fucking video. Present to the audience what your trying to teach don't look back and forth 100 times in the first minute. People are comming to this video to be educated not listen to the bum at the grocery store tell them about how Obama is poisoning American milk. Get to the point and stay on it.

Remember these containers come from other countries. Wood floors could be treated with insecticides and pesticides to prevent continental transfer of insects and such. Paint could be led based. There are no guidelines or restrictions on their units. Not fit for human occupation. The idea is a good one but could this lead to health problems? list of chemicals usedhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4465480/table/Tab1/
